An eating institution and a volunteer leader in historic Laurens County were recognized with honors of distinction. At this month’s Laurens County Chamber of Commerce luncheon, Ernie and Gail Whiteford of Whiteford’s Giant Burger in Laurens and Melinda Gray of Palmetto Heritage Reality were presented with the chamber's Small Business of the Quarter Award and the Ambassador of the Quarter Award.

" I was shocked and deeply honored to receive this award. This community and our chamber mean so much to me. To be recognized with this award is very special," Gray said.

"It is no surprise that Whiteford’s Giant Burger was selected by the chamber committee as this quarter's award recipient," remarked Rob Clapper, President and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce. "Ernie’s father, Ernie, and his wife Gail have supported the chamber for many years and is because of our strong members we have such a strong chamber to serve the community. Likewise, we could not serve the community or our membership without the dedication and volunteerism of our chamber ambassadors. Melinda is very deserving of this honor and her time and support is appreciated immensely."

Clapper explained that the quarterly awards recognize small businesses in our community that are truly "excellent." Criteria for the award include customer service, community involvement and leadership, chamber membership, and business image. "Ernie’s father, Ernie, Gail and the entire Whiteford family have remained committed to the success of Laurens County. It’s even more sentimental as they approach their 50th anniversary this August."

The Ambassador program is an integral part of the membership outreach and retention program of the Laurens County Chamber of Commerce.

Ambassadors are men and women who, on behalf of the Laurens County Chamber of Commerce, make goodwill calls and visits on a regular basis to member organizations & businesses. Ambassadors act as liaisons between the Chamber and its membership and provide an active communication link between the two. "Melinda has provided an invaluable service to our chamber and to the community and it’s truly our honor to recognize her," said Dr. Bud Marchant, Chairman of the Chamber Board.
