County Council Action Levels Holiday Playing Field for Area Businesses

Move opens up competition with surrounding counties

Laurens County Council voted to suspend Sunday work prohibitions during the upcoming holiday season, from November 25, 2007 – December 30, 2007. The vote was taken during their regular meeting on October 23, 2007.

The S. C. Law commonly referred to as "Blue Laws," declares that it is unlawful for some businesses to open on Sundays before 1:30 p.m. Laurens County is one of nearly 38 counties that have "Blue Laws" in effect.

Many County merchants depend upon the holiday season to earn the majority of revenues that support their annual budgets and pay their employees throughout the year. Without the seasonal suspension of the Blue Laws, county businesses will be competing with businesses in surrounding counties and some county municipalities, which will be open earlier on Sundays.

The ability to shop on Sundays during the upcoming holiday season will be a convenience to the public as well as a boost to Laurens County businesses.
