Pioneer Day, an annual celebration of local heritage, was held September 13 in Owings in northern Laurens County. The festival, founded by the Gray Court-Owings Historical Society, preserves the pioneer spirit of early Scotch-Irish settlers as well as exploring the history of the Cherokee Indian Nation which once covered all of Laurens County. The festival included demonstrations of by-gone life skills, antique machinery and car displays, period music and a parade as well as Indian, Revolutionary era and War Between the States era historical re-enactments. Dr. Rembert Owings, 101 year old grandson of the founder of the Owings community, served as the parade grand marshal.
