Laurens County has Record Year for Economic Development in 2008 It was a banner year for Laurens County, which defied the national economic downturn by setting a new record for capital investments. Capital investments for 2008 were $618.5 million which shatters the previous record of $236.5 million, set back in 1998. Last year, 690 new jobs were announced, making 2008 the third best job creation year behind 2000 (923 new jobs) and 2003 (890 new jobs). The record capital investment was the result of two large projects selecting Laurens County. In October, Fitesa, a Brazilian non-woven manufacturer, selected Owings Industrial Park as the site for its new US manufacturing facility. Fitesa will invest $150 million and create 125 new jobs over the next five years. In November, American Titanium Works announced a $420 million manufacturing facility outside the City of Laurens. ATW also announced that a research facility would be located at the International Center for Automotive Research (ICAR) in Greenville, South Carolina. The new manufacturing facility will employ 320 in the first five years. |
