AMBASSADOR PROGRAM

This elite group of volunteers
serves as a welcome committee,
assists with membership campaigns,
and acts as public relations liaisons
related to networking/social events sponsored by the chamber.
Our Chamber Ambassador Committee is a vital component of the Chamber's outreach and engagement program. Composed of exclusive volunteers, the Chamber Ambassadors act as public relations liaisons for networking and social events sponsored by the Chamber.
Ambassadors serve as the welcoming committee for the Chamber, helping to engage new members and existing members alike. The Ambassadors support the Chamber's mission by promoting its activities and events, helping with membership campaigns, and leveraging the Chamber's active members to enhance engagement and participation.
Ambassadors are appointed to serve a one-year term, after which they may reapply for consecutive terms. This program provides a unique opportunity for individuals who are passionate about networking, social events, and public relations to get involved with the Chamber and make a positive impact on the community.

THORNWELL
Community Engagement Coordinator
Becca Dobbins

My name is Becca Dobbins, and I’m a native of Greenwood, South Carolina, where I was born and raised. I’ve been happily married to my incredible husband, Matthew, for almost four years. We share a deep love for rescuing animals and currently have quite the furry (and scaly!) family – six dogs, 2 cats, and a bearded dragon. When we’re not busy caring for our pets, we enjoy traveling, watching scary movies, and simply spending quiet, quality time together at home. Where do you work, and what’s your role? What do you enjoy most about what you do? I work at Thornwell as the Community Engagement Coordinator. In my role, I have the incredible opportunity to connect with local partners, organize events, and support initiatives that make a meaningful impact in the lives of children and families. What I enjoy most about what I do is the chance to give back to the community and help others. Being part of something bigger than myself and seeing the positive difference we can make every day is truly rewarding. How long have you been an Ambassador, and what’s a personal or professional “win” you’ve experienced through your Chamber involvement? I’ve been an ambassador for almost a year now, and it’s been such a valuable experience. Being involved with the Chamber has helped me learn more about the Laurens County community and connect with so many incredible local leaders and organizations. A personal win for me has been gaining a deeper understanding of the resources and services available in our area – and being able to share that information with others to help them get connected and supported. What’s one local business or hidden gem in Laurens County you think more people should discover? One local gem I think more people should discover is Lush Acres Farm and Market. It’s a beautiful spot that showcase the best of what Laurens County has to offer - from fresh, locally grown produce to family-friendly events and a welcoming atmosphere. Whether you’re stopping by for seasonal goods or enjoying one of the community events, Lush Acres is a place that brings people together and highlights the value of supporting locals. Bonus points that your purchases from Lush Acres go into supporting the children and families we serve at Thornwell! If you could instantly learn a new skill or hobby, what would it be and why? If I could instantly learn a new skill, it would be sign language. I’ve always admired the beauty and importance of nonverbal communication, and being able to connect with the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community in a meaningful way would be incredibly rewarding. I believe that learning sign language not only breaks down communication barriers but also promotes inclusivity and understanding.

Throughout this time, the Ambassador program has significantly contributed to my ability to cultivate relationships within the local community and with local businesses. I believe that active engagement with local organizations, participation in community events, and involvement in networking opportunities are essential to maximizing my impact as an Ambassador. By dedicating myself to serving others and fostering meaningful relationships, I have established myself as a trusted resource and demonstrated my commitment to the community. This ability to connect and contribute effectively is a significant professional achievement in my role, and I consider it a substantial “win” in my journey as an Ambassador.

THORNWELL
Human Resource Coordinator
Lacresha Dowdy

My name is Lacresha Dowdy, and I would consider myself to be a free spirit. I believe that if you can think about it, you should at least try and do it. If whatever you try doesn’t work out the way you wanted it to, at least you tried something new. Life is a journey, and you never really know what is coming next. Where do you work, and what’s your role? What do you enjoy most about what you do? I work for Thornwell as the Human Resources Coordinator. The thing I enjoy most about my job is the diversity of the work and the overall helping of my coworkers, but anyone that comes on campus. How long have you been an Ambassador, and what’s a personal or professional “win” you’ve experienced through your Chamber involvement? This is my second year as a Chamber Ambassador; a professional win that I have experienced with the Chamber is being able to help my business "buddies". I have a few businesses that have now turned into friends, and working with them to help grow their business is a connection that will last a lifetime. It's nothing better than seeing your friends succeed and continue with a successful business here in Laurens County. What’s one local business or hidden gem in Laurens County you think more people should discover? I think that people need to visit PittsMusic because they have so much to offer. When you walk into the building, it is like it takes you to a whole new world of music. The amount of creativity in one space is amazing, from piano lessons to singing lessons, there is something for everyone. This amazing space is great for any celebration or business meeting because it is centrally located and has great parking. If you could instantly learn a new skill or hobby, what would it be and why? If I could learn anything new, it would be swimming because I love the water, but my arms and legs refuse to move at the same time. As much as I get in the water, you would think I knew how, but I don’t. For some reason coordination didn’t come in this package, but that doesn’t keep me away for one the thing that bring me the most peace, water. I firmly believe that God protects babies and other types of people, so I will continue to take my chances until I learn.

GATEWAY COUNSELING CENTER
Prevention Director
Marilyn (Quia) Cromer

Greetings! My name is Quia Cromer. I am from the big city of Joanna, SC but currently live in Clinton. I am the proud Mom of a son, Xavier, 15, daughter, Marquia, 9 and turtle son, Ernie (no idea of age). I am a die-hard fan and proud Alum of The University of South Carolina, Gooo Cocks! I love spending time with my kids/turtle, family/friends, traveling, & cooking/baking. I enjoy meeting, learning and working with people from different walks of life (hence part of my 19 years of experience as a Social Worker). Where do you work, and what’s your role? What do you enjoy most about what you do? I work at the Gateway Counseling Center which is the Laurens County Alcohol and Drug Commission. I have been at the agency for 10 years and dual certified as an Alcohol/Drug Treatment Counselor and Prevention Specialist. I am the Prevention Director in which my role to develop, coordinate programs and events to educate and increase awareness of drug trends occurring in Laurens County. What I enjoy most about what I do is being out and working in the community; doing presentations; partnering at community events; having the opportunity to meet people and listen to their stories to inspire me to continue to do what I do. How long have you been an Ambassador, and what’s a personal or professional “win” you’ve experienced through your Chamber involvement? This is my second year as an Ambassador. A professional win with being an Ambassador is the networking and learning more about the local businesses and their impact on the community. A personal win is the relationships developed to partner on implementing events/programs in the community that eventually lead to friendships. What’s one local business or hidden gem in Laurens County you think more people should discover? KOT Pack and Ship, shipping supply and services; located in a unique location, in front of the Laurens County Courthouse & across from the Palmetto Restaurant in Laurens. I had the wonderful opportunity to meet the owner, Michanna Tate as we both served on a Juneteeth panel last month. I learned so much about her goal of keeping this “need” in Laurens County. They are the only shipping and supply store in Laurens County. So instead of traveling 25-30 miles to a UPS store to ship a package or you in that area and need to a last minute printed or faxed document instead driving across town, check out KOT Pack and Ship to handle your shipping and other supply needs. If you could instantly learn a new skill or hobby, what would it be and why? I would learn to drive a stick shift car. I have only driven automatic cars since I got my license at 15. I always wanted to learn but life kept on life-ing and moving forward. I feel that I need to learn how to drive a stick shift in the event of an emergency and I may need to drive the person and his/her car to the ER just my luck, the car is a stick shift. Eventually I will learn … hey better late than never.
PALMETTO HERITAGE REAL ESTATE

Melinda Gray

I am a person who enjoys helping others in both my personal and professional life. I enjoy giving and volunteering within my community. I am on the board for the Bell Center for the Blind, help with Bunco for Babies with LCDSNB, and other initiatives in Laurens County. I find this extremely fulfilling. On the home front I have been married for 43 years, have one son, and a wonderful daughter in love. I love flowers, the water, reading, and our pets. Family time is the best time. I love our church family at Light House Baptist Church and enjoy activities within the church. I have the best friends and am blessed in so many ways. Where do you work, and what’s your role? What do you enjoy most about what you do? I have worked with Palmetto Heritage Real Estate for the past 30 years. I am a broker associate as well as an appraiser. I list, sell, and do appraisals. I am passionate about my profession and dedicated to helping clients and customers achieve their dreams and ambitions. I am honored to be working with second-generation clients. I find it rewarding to be able to assist with such a major milestone in someone’s life. How long have you been an Ambassador, and what’s a personal or professional “win” you’ve experienced through your Chamber involvement? I must admit that I cannot remember how long. I think around 15 years. Randall Frye recruited me years ago, and it has been amazing and rewarding to see how our Ambassador program has grown, as well as all the successes of the Chamber. I have been rewarded to make community and individual connections through my work with the Chamber. I have earned friends and clients through my connections and am thankful for the opportunity. I appreciate all of the opportunities volunteering with the Chamber has afforded me, and I feel like the staff is the best. What’s one local business or hidden gem in Laurens County you think more people should discover? That's hard, as there are so many. I love Great Crepes and Sunny Meadows children's store. Fall is my favorite season, so I am always excited for Steward Farms to open for the season. Verdin’s Too is a wonderful place to destress and wander. Designs by D is my go-to store as they have such a variety of handmade products and unique gifts. If you could instantly learn a new skill or hobby, what would it be and why? I would love to be able to do shorthand. A new skill would be woodworking or to learn handy repair skills. Maybe to water ski, but I think that should have been many years ago.
JOE ADAIR OUTDOOR CENTER
Director
Tanya Towne

I love being outside and immersing myself in nature. I enjoy sharing that love with my friends and family. We go camping, kayaking, and hiking mostly. I am most happiest when I am outside, whether it is yard work or just sipping a cold drink in the shade. I have a wonderful 25-year-old son who has inherited my love of animals and is such a big help when I go out of town. Where do you work, and what’s your role? What do you enjoy most about what you do? I am the director and teacher at the Joe Adair Center. I love teaching the students of Laurens County. Sharing my animals and taking them on nature walks is so rewarding for me. When I see these kids out in the community, they instantly know who I am and tell me that coming to the center was the best field trip ever! I get to teach them about science, our environment, and hopefully plant the seed for a future eco-warrior, or at the least a nature enthusiast. How long have you been an Ambassador, and what’s a personal or professional “win” you’ve experienced through your Chamber involvement? I am in my second year as an Ambassador. I think this experience is wonderful and has helped me to make great connections in the community. I would say one of the professional wins I have experienced through my involvement with the chamber would be gaining new partners and volunteers for events at the center. A personal win would be making new friends. What’s one local business or hidden gem in Laurens County you think more people should discover? I think the Joe Adair Center is one, but that’s not fair to self-promote. I think the trails that we have in Laurens County total is a hidden gem that I would like to see more people discover and support. If you could instantly learn a new skill or hobby, what would it be and why? This may sound a little odd, but I would love to instantly learn how to be a mason. I love the creations I have seen people do with rocks, bricks, and mortar. I think that it would be really cool to have the ability to build something lasting out of rocks. I also think it would be a meditative or therapeutic activity.
