Meet our Ambassadors: Marilyn Quia Cromer
Tell us a little about yourself.
Greetings! My name is Quia Cromer. I am from the big city of Joanna, SC but currently live in Clinton. I am the proud Mom of a son, Xavier, 15, daughter, Marquia, 9 and turtle son, Ernie (no idea of age). I am a die-hard fan and proud Alum of The University of South Carolina, Gooo Cocks! I love spending time with my kids/turtle, family/friends, traveling, & cooking/baking. I enjoy meeting, learning and working with people from different walks of life (hence part of my 19 years of experience as a Social Worker).
Where do you work, and what’s your role? What do you enjoy most about what you do?
I work at the Gateway Counseling Center which is the Laurens County Alcohol and Drug Commission. I have been at the agency for 10 years and dual certified as an Alcohol/Drug Treatment Counselor and Prevention Specialist. I am the Prevention Director in which my role to develop, coordinate programs and events to educate and increase awareness of drug trends occurring in Laurens County.
What I enjoy most about what I do is being out and working in the community; doing presentations; partnering at community events; having the opportunity to meet people and listen to their stories to inspire me to continue to do what I do.
How long have you been an Ambassador, and what’s a personal or professional “win” you’ve experienced through your Chamber involvement?
This is my second year as an Ambassador. A professional win with being an Ambassador is the networking and learning more about the local businesses and their impact on the community. A personal win is the relationships developed to partner on implementing events/programs in the community that eventually lead to friendships.
What’s one local business or hidden gem in Laurens County you think more people should discover?
KOT Pack and Ship, shipping supply and services; located in a unique location, in front of the Laurens County Courthouse & across from the Palmetto Restaurant in Laurens. I had the wonderful opportunity to meet the owner, Michanna Tate as we both served on a Juneteeth panel last month. I learned so much about her goal of keeping this “need” in Laurens County. They are the only shipping and supply store in Laurens County. So instead of traveling 25-30 miles to a UPS store to ship a package or you in that area and need to a last minute printed or faxed document instead driving across town, check out KOT Pack and Ship to handle your shipping and other supply needs.
If you could instantly learn a new skill or hobby, what would it be and why?
I would learn to drive a stick shift car. I have only driven automatic cars since I got my license at 15. I always wanted to learn but life kept on life-ing and moving forward. I feel that I need to learn how to drive a stick shift in the event of an emergency and I may need to drive the person and his/her car to the ER just my luck, the car is a stick shift. Eventually I will learn … hey better late than never.
